Is your Petrol go kart failing to kick over for you? Don’t get frustrated. There are a few things that you need to check over before you head down to the shop.

Taking these karts in for repairs on a regular basis can get expensive, so it’s in your best interest to learn how to perform the most basic maintenance to avoid these types of engine problems from happening, but also, that you know how to take care of them when they come up.

If the engine doesn’t start at all, there are a few different things that could have gone wrong. First, check out the spark plug. To do this, pull on the wire and plug boot (rubber cover) and using a wrench, remove the spark plug turning counter clockwise. You’re looking for any black, or charred build up on the tip of the plug. If this has happened, it could be faulty, and need to be cleaned or even changed out depending on how many hours of use are on it.

Once you’ve determined that the plug is good, pull the air filter from its box. There are usually two clips holding the front of the air box in place, and applying light pressure releases them. Upon inspecting the air filter, if you see that it is dark in colour, you’ll want to plan to change it. A good performing air filter will appear white or cream in colour. If checking these doesn’t reveal anything, the engine may be flooded. Leave the spark plug out and allow the kart to sit in the sun for a few hours to release the fumes from the cylinders.

While these tips are great if the motor doesn’t start, sometimes problems arise that can get quite elaborate. Unless you know engines inside and out, you could easily spend a lot of time and money trying to determine what the problem is. However, one of the most common problems associated with petrol go karts is running smooth and then dying off when you press the gas. This is typically a carburettor adjustment problem, and can usually be fixed by turning a few small tuning screws. Make sure that you understand how to tune it, and what each screw means before you start turning them.

If problems that you’re having with the go kart remain even after checking these common issues, then you might want to think about taking it into a shop for repair. Before you begin breaking it down trying to figure it out on your own, you’ll need to ensure that you have the proper skill set to not only diagnose the problem, but fix it and put the motor back together.

The seat belts on your go kart are another area that you must inspect before anyone starts the engine. If the vehicle you’ll be using doesn’t have them on it, you might reconsider your choice of participating for the day. Accidents can happen at any time, and without a seat belt, you are at a much greater risk of injury should you end up involved in one. Look for frays in the seat belt cording, and check that they are properly mounted, as well as snug fitting around the driver.

Lastly, go over the braking system. Brakes are necessary to bring the kart to a stop, and with ill fitting or improperly maintained brakes, you are putting yourself at risk. Make sure that the discs have plenty of pad left, and that the brake cables are firm. Adjust any slack as necessary. Once the driver has been seated and buckled in, check that they can reach the pedals easily, and that they don’t have too much side to side movement.
